SDS believed the University played an important role in stimulating intellectual conversation on American political life. Therefore, they encouraged students and professors to actively participate in the world around them.
The main goal of SDS was to give power back to the people. They wanted people to participate and make decisions in the political issues that affected their lives.
The ACLU released a statement in disagreement with U of M's compliance with HUAC. They believed the civil liberties of U of M students and faculty should have been protected by the University.
