SDS proposed a new concept, "participatory democracy." This meant participating in government went beyond placing a ballot on election day.

SDS believed the University played an important role in stimulating intellectual conversation on American political life. Therefore, they encouraged students and professors to actively participate in the world around them.

The main goal of SDS was to give power back to the people. They wanted people to participate and make decisions in the political issues that affected their lives.
