The Evolution of Women's Spaces

Women's spaces have been evolving since the first woman student arrived at U-M in the winter of 1870. Their spaces have evolved to create communities of camradarie among women on a campus where they were often a minority and faced oppression. The Women's League was instrumental in fundraising for many of these spaces. Over time, many of these women's spaces either disappear or become integrated with men.
