  • January: German Zeppelin air raid on England (Western Front)

  • Jan 2: Concert to 'Aid Starved Belgians' held in Hill Auditorium. 
  • Feb 4: Germany declares submarine blockade of Great Britain, identifying any ship approaching England as a legitimate target. (Western Front)

  • April 25: Allies begin Battle of Gallipoli (Turkey)

  • May 7: Lusitania sinks, 128 Americans die (1,198 civilians overall).

  • Aug. 30: Germany agrees to cease sinking ships without warning

  • Sept 15: Poison Gas used in battle, causes casualties on both sides.

  • Oct.  William Herbert Hobbs establishes the University of Michigan's chapter of the National Security League (NSL).
